THE NEFARIA PROTOCOLS (2000)

By the year 2000, the numerous deaths and doubles (and deaths of doubles) had made Madame Masque an almost unusable character. Kurt Busiek's continuity-cleaning obsession was the only thing that could save her. Add her ionic-powered father to the mix and you've got reason enough for another Avengers/Thunderbolts jamboree!

With Jolt having been shot by the all-new Scourge, Moonstone missing and quite possibly insane and Citizen V (Dallas Riordan) in the clutches of the Crimson Cowl, the T-Bolts line-up is looking pitiful. And they haven't eve realised their tech-guy, Ogre, is really Baron Zemo's lackey, the Fixer, in disguise...

Avengers #32
The Black Widow arrives at Avengers Mansion with information on Madame Masque. She's actually the daughter of Count Nefaria and created clones of herself to keep her distance from potential betrayals (Masque is another of those clones introduced during THE CROSSING). Now, Count Nefaria is back from the dead and she's paranoid that he's gunning for her. The Avengers and Grim Reaper learn the location of her desert base and battle it out until Count Nefaria arrives with Atlas and Wonder Man under his control...

Citizen V washes up in Latveria. And Moonstone breaks into Pier 4, headquarters of the Fantastic Four.

Thunderbolts #44
Moonstone speaks in Kree as she tackles Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. Andrea Sterman learns the Scourge is funded by the Commission on Superhuman Activities. Scourge sees through Ogre's disguise and goes in for the kill. Captain America and She-Hulk return to the Avengers and join Madame Masque in journeying to Nefaria's castle with the results of her Nefaria Protocols; an Ionic Lock (basically, a huge gun). Mach-2 uses the lock to free Atlas and Wonder Man, but it does nothing against Nefaria...

Avengers #34
The Avengers and Thunderbolts lay it on against the omnipotent Count Nefaria who intends using his ionic bomb to grant everyone ionic powers, then rule the world through control or destroy it, regardless. Madame Masque sneaks in with her second, complete Ionic Lock just as the bomb launches.
Masque fires the lock at her father, who begins leaking energy. The bomb goes off, but Wonder Man and Atlas chase after it and absorb all the ionic energy. Nefaria follows, but expends too much energy and explodes. The Avengers and T-Bolts part on good terms for once.

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

ISLAND OF THE DAMNED (1972)

It's Halloween, so how's about a little old school werewolf action ?  Around this time, Marvel had a tendency to try new characters out in titles like Marvel Spotlight or Marvel Premiere , then give them their own series if they proved to be popular. However, the characters' first issues often carried on the story from those other books, so you'd pick up issue 1 only to find yourself in the middle of an ongoing tale (for other examples, see Captain Marvel in THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL or Adam Warlock in COUNT-DOWN FOR COUNTER-EARTH ). In the Werewolf By Night 's case, this little two-parter featuring his search for the Darkhold  would flow from Marvel Spotlight into his very own ongoing series. Jack Russell has only recently discovered his true family legacy and that Phillip Russell , the man he believed to be his father, is actually his uncle. His biological father, Baron Gregory Russoff (Phillip's brother), was a magic user and werewolf. Jack inherite...
