THE LAST BANZAI (1967-1968)

The Howling Commandos are sent on a mission to the Pacific as World War II rages on. Over 20 years after the end of the war, the racism might be realistic but the chaos of war isn't quite so reflective. Not all of the Howlers will make it out of this one, though. Plus, the Skipper returns to drop Nick Fury 's unit off at Tarawa and we finally find out his real name - Captain Simon Savage - when he leads his own band of Leatherneck Raiders on a separate mission on the same island. Yep, it's time spin-off time! Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos #49-50 Captain Savage and his Leatherneck Raiders #1 Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos #49 The Howling Commandos are sent to Tarawa to rescue stranded Australian artillery observer, Rolfe Harrison , who has important information that will help the Allied Forces take down the Japanese outpost. The mission goes awry and Sgt Nick Fury 's squad are taken captive. Izzy Cohen is taken away for questioning and torture, only for H...

SAVE A HOWLER (1968)

The version of the super-villain Klaw  ( Ulysses Klaw ) who featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ( Earth-199999 ) appeared to have a bit of a name change, appearing as Ulysses Klaue . This apparent adjustment actually relates back to the character's mainstream Marvel Universe appearances. Not long after Klaw's first appearance, a Nazi character with a similar-sounding name (and missing hand) appeared in Marvel's World War II-centric S gt Fury and his Howling Commandos   #39 . Colonel Fritz Klaue is later revealed to be Ulysses Klaw's father, who legally changed his name to Fritz Klaw after the war (see the ' Fallout ' section below). In the story SAVE A HOWLER , Colonel Klaue upgrades his metal hand for one with bionic elements. Giving the middle finger is pretty deadly when Klaue gives it to the Howling Commandos. Though his connection to Klaw wasn't established for some time, yet, he still made life difficult for Nick Fury on more than one occasi...

T.H.E.M. (1966)

Nick Fury and his agents of SHIELD have just defeated the international terrorist organisation, Hydra . But the world is far from safe as an even greater, more mysterious threat lurks on the horizon.  Who are THEM ? Or should that be... who is THEM? That grammatical issue won't be addressed by SHIELD, Captain America , the Hulk or the Sub-Mariner , but they'll all find themselves in the crosshairs of THEM! The storyline introduces a huge number of characters and concepts to the Marvel Universe , including AIM , Batroc the Leaper , Boomerang , Peggy Carter , Sharon Carter , the Cosmic Cube , Fixer , Mentallo , the Secret Empire , Jasper Sitwell and the Super-Adaptoid , and also brought the Red Skull into the modern age. Thanks to Solletaire for pointing this one out to me. I've run this one before, but recently discovered a load more tie-in issues that add a whole other level of crazy to this Kirby-fuelled conspiracy.
