The second Captain Marvel to be introduced to the Marvel Universe was Monica Rambeau. And she immediately struck it big by joining the Avengers from the word 'go'. Despite not actually knowing who her namesake, Mar-Vell, was grew into her title quickly, eventually becoming Avengers chairman under that name. She'd eventually lose out on the name to Mar-Vell's son, Genis-Vell, and adopt the name Photon instead. When Genis became Photon, she dropped that name too and would eventually settle on Spectrum. Whatever codename she uses, Monica Rambeau remains a Marvel mainstay.
In her first appearance, Monica Rambeau recalls her humble beginnings as a less-than-humble maverick New Orleans cop, vying for captaincy. On old friend of her father's, Andre LeClare, asks her to investigate work carried out by Roxxon on an offshore rig to weaponise his work. Monica sabotages the experimental technology, but gains the ability to turn into different forms of energy. She turns some Mardi Gras costumes into a disguise and saves everyone on the rig when the experiment threatens to end our universe, only to be dubbed Captain Marvel by a guard and the local press...
Peter Parker reveals a creepier side to his personality when Monica Rambeau peaks his interest when she arrives in New York. As Spider-Man, he followers her around the city, eventually believing her to be a threat and not realising she's desperate for help. When she's unable to find Mister Fantastic at the Baxter Building, Spider-Man finally tracks her down at Avengers Mansion where Iron Man narrowly saves her life form the cosmic energies she absorbed on Roxxon's rig.
