EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HERO (2012)

OK, so you don't need to read the Avenging Spider-Man issues listed below, but issue Avenging Spider-Man #9 came out a week before Captain Marvel #1, making it Carol Danvers' first appearance as Captain Marvel. Plus her odd, pseudo-flirtatious relationship with Peter Parker continues in that series and the storyline is also written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, writer of Carol's solo Captain Marvel series.

Carol Danvers first appeared as a love interest for the original Captain Marvel (the Kree hero Mar-Vell) before gaining Kree powers from exposure to the Psyche-Magnitron and becoming Ms Marvel. From there, she lost her powers and emotions to Rogue, gained different powers to become Binary, returned to her Ms Marvel costume but took the name Warbird, then returned as Ms Marvel once again. Isn't it time she jus took on the Captain Marvel mantle?
[THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL - Carol Danvers' first appearance]
  • Captain Marvel #1
  • Avenging Spider-Man #9-10
  • Captain Marvel #2-6
Captain Marvel #1
Carol Danvers makes her first public appearance in her new, occasionally-maskless uniform tackling the Absorbing Man alongside Captain America. Noticing the public are assuming she's a new hero, Cap suggests Carol drop the Ms Marvel name in favour of finally picking up the original Captain Marvel's mantle and carrying on his legacy. After sparring with Spider-Man and flying into space, Carol decides to become Captain Marvel. She goes on to recall the time she met her hero, one of the first American female pilots, Helen Cobb.

Avenging Spider-Man #9
Carol agrees to give Peter Parker, a lift to Boston in a rickety plane and the pair end up suiting up as Captain Marvel and Spider-Man to rescue a girl with a jetpack from armoured pursuers. Captain Marvel takes out the heavily armed Blackbird Security guys, but they shoot the girl - now calling herself Robyn Hood - who then grows to about 40 feet.
Avenging Spider-Man #10
It seems Robyn Hood is a robot created by Shelley Godwin on behalf of the National Federal Bank. Robyn's programming led to her robbing the Bank, leading to them hiring Blackbird Security to bring her in. Spidey realises her growth powers are about to overload her jetpack and make her explode. Robyn Hood flies up above Boston and explodes, saving the citizens while transferring her consciousness to Shelley Godwin's computer.

Captain Marvel #2
Carol Danvers buys Helen Cobbs' archaic T6 plane and tries to prove how Cobb made a record breaking journey to Peru by repeating the flight herself. She finds herself in trouble when the plane drops from the sky, there's a flash and she wakes up surrounded by Japanese soldiers. She's rescued by a band of female American soldiers called Banshee Squadron and learns she's ended up in Peru in 1943. Carol reveals her powers to the Squadron when the Japanese soldiers send Kree ships to capture them...
Captain Marvel #3
Captain Marvel and Banshee Squadron take on the entire fleet of Kree Prowlers piloted by the Japanese soldiers. It's all going well until four combine into one giant war machine. In 1961, Helen Cobb and her friends petition NASA to let them become astronauts.

Captain Marvel #4
Carol concentrates her blast to take out the combiner Prowler. When Banshee Squadron are done capturing the Japanese troops, Carol learns they ended up in Peru much the same way she did and realises it's somehow connected to the Psyche Magnitron. When she sees herself flying the T6 overhead, she takes to the sky and disappears in another flash. Carol arrives in 1961 where she meets young Helen Cobb.
Captain Marvel #5
Carol Danvers joins Helen Cobbs group of disenfranchised female pilots when NASA give them a token gesture shot at flying in return for Helen's fragment of the Psyche Magnitron. Realising they've been duped, Carol and Helen steal the fragment back from NASA, then the pair of them jump forward in time to the moment when Carol Danvers got her powers...

Captain Marvel #6
Helen Cobb convinces Carol to help Mar-Vell when Yon-Yogg's Mandroid robot arrives and starts pummelling him, while her past self holds Yon-Rogg at gunpoint. When the Psyche Magnitron explodes (like it did the first time around), Cobb ends up with powers and decides to take Carol's place as Captain Marvel. Carol beats Helen to the T6 when it appears overhead and travels back to the present day.

Avengers Assemble #16 (2013)

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

MYS-TECH WARS (1993)

Everyone knows corporations are evil. Every single one of them. Mys-Tech are no exception. Especially as their board made a deal with Mephisto for power and immortality in exchange for the funnelling of souls straight into his dimension way back in 987AD. The deal's done alright for them over the years, but now they want out... In recent weeks, the London-based chemical company has made a number of super-powered enemies whose origins tie directly into their own magickal activities. Now all of those new foes - from the UK-based Dark Ange l, Motormouth , Killpower and the Knights of Pendragon to the time-travelling Death's Head - are about to come after them all at once. And they're bringing the Avengers , X-Men and more! Mys-Tech are growing a perfect replica of the real planet Earth called the UnEarth. Once it's fully-grown, they'll tinker with it to suit their needs and replace the original with a world they control. Marvel UK's line of titles didn't ...
