In 2006, Stan Lee returned to Marvel Comics in time for their 45th anniversary to write the initial stories in a series of titles in a fifth-week event. The gimmick was that each book would feature a story written by Stan in which he meets one of the characters he co-created with either the wildly imaginative Steve Ditko or creative juggernaut Jack Kirby.
I just want to focus on the Lee-written stories from this event, but each issue also included additional stories featuring Stan Lee by other writers or reprinted examples of his early work.
Now, don't expect the characters he interacts with to play by the rules! Stan amps up the humour to either self-deprecate or self-promote as a little nod and a wink to the sides of his personality we've come to know. And, wherever this all takes place, it's definitely not Earth-616...
Spider-Man swings into Stan Lee's apartment to ask why he can't just lead a normal life. Stan tells him to stop feeling sorry for himself and get back out there. Merchandisers rely way too heavily on him to make money and he needs to keep on going to keep them in business. Soon after, Mosquito Man checks in with Spider-Man who tells him it's not yet his time to shine.
