DEADLY KNIGHTS (1994)

The first Marvel/DC crossover since Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans #1, twelve years earlier. This time around we meet the Punisher (Frank Castle) of Earth-7642 as his war on crime brings him to Gotham City. His hunt for Jigsaw will attract the attention of Batman (John-Paul Valley, formerly known as Azrael). He returns to Gotham sometime later and clashed with the original Batman (Bruce Wayne) and the infamous Joker.

This return to Earth-7642 (Marvel's crossover universe - where continuity is essentially the same, but the crossover stories don't effect the mainstream universe) heralded a slew of Marvel/DC crossovers set outside of regular continuity (for Marvel, at least) until both mainstream universe literally clashed in MARVEL VERSUS DC a year later.

There are some truly odd story-telling choices in this one. I had to double-check it was written by Denny O'Neil. The Punisher of Earth-7642 is much the same as his Earth-616 counterpart, but embarrassingly easy to lure into obvious traps.

  • Batman/Punisher #1
  • Punisher/Batman #1
MCG Note: These two issues are sometimes referred to as Batman/Punisher: Lake of Fire and Punisher/Batman: Deadly Knights.
Batman/Punisher #1
The new Batman (Jean-Paul Valley) hunts down the criminals who stole a formula for rocket fuel from the FBI. The Punisher is on the same trail as Jigsaw is in on the scam and plans to burn away Gotham City's reservoirs and cash in on the inevitable rebuild. Batman saves Jigsaw when the Punisher throws him off a roof. The Joker arrives and frees Jigsaw while the Punisher and Batman save Gotham City after the obligatory tussle, which Batman loses when Frank gasses him with his own grenade and makes his escape...

Punisher/Batman #1
The Punisher returns to Gotham City to kill Jigsaw and the Joker who plan to become the city's crime lords. While Microchip engages in an unrealistic hacking war with Robin, the Punisher and Batman (Bruce Wayne) converge on gangster Jimmy Navarone's club as the Joker and Jigsaw do the same. The Punisher chases down the Joker until Batman shows up to save Joker's life. Batman easily takes the Punisher down and orders him to leave Gotham City. Which he does, gladly...

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

ISLAND OF THE DAMNED (1972)

It's Halloween, so how's about a little old school werewolf action ?  Around this time, Marvel had a tendency to try new characters out in titles like Marvel Spotlight or Marvel Premiere , then give them their own series if they proved to be popular. However, the characters' first issues often carried on the story from those other books, so you'd pick up issue 1 only to find yourself in the middle of an ongoing tale (for other examples, see Captain Marvel in THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL or Adam Warlock in COUNT-DOWN FOR COUNTER-EARTH ). In the Werewolf By Night 's case, this little two-parter featuring his search for the Darkhold  would flow from Marvel Spotlight into his very own ongoing series. Jack Russell has only recently discovered his true family legacy and that Phillip Russell , the man he believed to be his father, is actually his uncle. His biological father, Baron Gregory Russoff (Phillip's brother), was a magic user and werewolf. Jack inherite...
