WAR BELOW THE WAVES (1973)

Hawkeye has quit the Avengers and he's determined to make it on his own. But let's face it, he's a team guy. And it looks like there just might be a place for him among the Defenders if he can survive a run-in with the Hulk. Wannabe-king of Atlantis, Attuma, teams up with Heihachi lookalike, the Red Ghost, in an attack on the surface world, giving Hawkeye a shot at making new friends.

The real purpose of WAR BELOW THE WAVES is to set up for the AVENGERS/DEFENDERS WAR which follows immediately after...

Incredible Hulk #166
When anti-government eco-warriors try to shut down a power station, the unleashed energy creates a being made of living electricity calling itself Zzzax, which starts consuming the life forces. Bruce Banner comes under threat from the rampaging Zzzax and is saved by Hawkeye whose arrows provide enough of a distraction to allow Bruce to regain his senses and Hulk out. Hawkeye uses a cable arrow and nearby water to short-circuit the creature, but the public believe the Hulk defeated Zzzax as he was more visible. In Russia, Colonel John D Armbruster and Major Glenn Talbot successfully rescue General Thunderbolt Ross, but Talbot is shot and taken prisoner in his place.

Defenders #7
Hawkeye tags along with Hulk when he reunites with his fellow Defenders. The group head to Atlantic City when they learn of Attuma's assault on the surface-world. The small Atlantean army and their giant crabs keep the Defenders busy, while the Attuma's ally, the Red Ghost, manipulates dolphins and a giant squid into defeating and capturing Namor the Sub-Mariner. The bored Hulk bounds off, leaving Hawkeye and Valkyrie to surrender. Hawkeye and Valkyrie escape their Atlantean cell, only to find out the Red Ghost has taken control of Namor's mind...

Defenders #8[1/2]
The raging, mind-controlled Sub-Mariner defeats Hawkeye and Valkyrie with ease. The Red Ghost reveals his plan to use his mind-control technology to take over the world. Two weeks later, the newly appointed Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, has figured out a cure the Black Knight who's been turned to stone. He and the Silver Surfer rush to Atlantis when they hear of the Defenders' capture. The Surfer breaks the Red Ghost's control over his allies and the Defenders defeat him and Attuma. MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

DEAD DAYS (2007)

The Marvel Zombies were a surprise hit when they made their debut, initially invading the Ultimate Universe , then getting their teeth into a mini-series of their own as written by Robert Kirkman of ' The Walking Dead ' fame. Earth-2149 was an Earth infected by a zombie virus that turned its inhabitants (seemingly concentrating on the super-human population) into undead flesh-eaters who retained their intelligence but lost all of their morality. We already knew the virus was brought to Earth-2149 by the Sentry of Earth-91126 , but how did it all play out in the beginning? And what part did Ashley "Ash" Williams of Earth-818793 have to do with it? How did the ' Chosen One ' assigned by God  himself to fight the Necronomicon 's Deadite ' Army of Darkness ' play a part in the end of humanity in the world of the Marvel Zombies..? MCG Note: Don't have access to the ' Army of Darkness ' comics but want to find out how it all began? Don...

THE BRIDE OF VENOM (1995-1996)

As if that wasn't enough, there's also a new Sin-Eater in town and Venom has a rematch with the Scarlet Spider in his guise as the new/old Spider-Man ...
