WILDC.A.T.S/X-MEN (1997-1998)

Jim Lee made his name as one of the most popular X-Men artists of all time. In fact, Marvel launched a new series featuring Lee's art that sold over 8 million copies and broke records.

Then he left.

Jim Lee founded Image Comics with six fellow Marvel creators, each launching their own new characters. The shared Image Universe didn't last long, and Jim Lee's WildCATs and other spin-off characters formed their own WildStorm Universe (still under Image Comics).

Not long before DC Comics bought WildStorm and brought that talent pool over to the DC Universe, we got a chance to see Jim Lee back with the X-Men in the inter-company WILDC.A.T.S/X-MEN four-issue crossover. Set on Marvel's alternate universe where their characters share a world with other companies (Earth-7642, aka Earth-Crossover), we learn that these WildCATs sporadically share a history with the Marvel's mutants.

Jim Lee only drew the Silver Age issue, but it was fun to see his take on the original X-Men. Or a version of them, anyway...

WildCATs/X-Men: The Golden Age #1
It's World War II, and Colonel Eikert Oberst has come to reclaim the Lazarus Scroll stolen from his fellow Nazis by Logan, who puts up a fight but still loses the scroll to Oberst. Aided by a stranger calling herself Lady Zannah who's also after the scroll, Logan gives chase and learns of Oberst's true nature as an alien Daemonite. Oberst is killed, but Kenyan obtains the Lazarus Scroll and uses it to resurrect Queen Ebron. Zannah (dubbed Zealot) kills Ebron and gets away before Logan can learn more about her...

WildCATs/X-Men: The Silver Age #1
Nick Fury brings Cole Cash into SHIELD, giving him the codename Deadeye and a mission to rescue a missing agent from the Daemonites and the Brood. Jean Grey is taking some time away from the X-Men to focus on modelling in Australia and tries to save the missing agent from a Brood/Daemonite attack, only to end up being rescued by Deadeye. Jean turns down Cash Cole's advances, but the two of them continue Agent Tom Maslow's mission and intercept a boat filled with Daemonites hoping to turn the famous passengers into Brood hosts. The two of them discover Mister Sinister acting behind the scenes and free the kidnapped Zealot. Jean (as Marvel Girl) defeats Pike, but Sinister escapes before the other X-Men arrive.

WildCATs/X-Men: The Modern Age #1
Lord Emp is invited to join the London chapter of the Hellfire Club. He takes fellow WildCATs Spartan and Voodoo with him in case it's a trap. Despite this, they soon find themselves prisoner of Cameron Blair who plans to sacrifice them to the Lord Of All That Is Not. The X-Men - who were investigating the Hellfire Club's activities - arrive with the WildCATs and free Lord Emp and the others while Phoenix destroys the demon.

X-Men/WildCATs: The Dark Age #1
In a dark alternate future (an undesignated divergent Earth from Earth-7642), the remaining X-Men and WildCATs live as prisoners of the Daemonites with inhibitor collar blocking access to their powers. Warblade sacrifices himself to break the inhibitors' control, freeing his friends. Together, they combine their powers to go back in time and prevent the first Daemonite assault on Earth before it happened.

MCG Note: While there's not real fallout from this mini, I've decided to list all of the other Marvel/WildStorm crossovers so you can see how they all fit together.

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

ISLAND OF THE DAMNED (1972)

It's Halloween, so how's about a little old school werewolf action ?  Around this time, Marvel had a tendency to try new characters out in titles like Marvel Spotlight or Marvel Premiere , then give them their own series if they proved to be popular. However, the characters' first issues often carried on the story from those other books, so you'd pick up issue 1 only to find yourself in the middle of an ongoing tale (for other examples, see Captain Marvel in THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL or Adam Warlock in COUNT-DOWN FOR COUNTER-EARTH ). In the Werewolf By Night 's case, this little two-parter featuring his search for the Darkhold  would flow from Marvel Spotlight into his very own ongoing series. Jack Russell has only recently discovered his true family legacy and that Phillip Russell , the man he believed to be his father, is actually his uncle. His biological father, Baron Gregory Russoff (Phillip's brother), was a magic user and werewolf. Jack inherite...
