ACTS OF VENGEANCE (1989-1990)

A mysterious figure emerges from nowhere and gathers the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe, manipulating each of them that the 'Acts of Vengeance' are their idea. The Prime Movers - Kingpin, Magneto, Doctor Doom, Red Skull, the Wizard and the Mandarin - convince super-villains to swap foes to gain the element of surprise and cause the death's of the heroes. Each hero faces a foe they'e never fought before, though there seems to be a heavy focus on destroying the Avengers, in particular. But if there's one things that'll bring the lackey's plan down to its knees, it's that bad guys always have their own agendas...

MCG Notes:
  1. Iron Man #250 isn't included because the 'Acts of Vengeance' banner was added to the cover in error.
  2. Likewise for Silver Surfer #33 which included the legend 'Acts of Idiocy' on the cover as a joke and is often mistaken as an actual tie-in!
  3. Officially, it's the titles with the full 'Acts of Vengeance' banners that follow the core story. The ones with an 'Acts of Vengeance' corner logo are officially considered to be tie-ins.
  4. Only want to read the essentials? I've marked the issues I believe to be key to the storyline with an asterisk*.
  5. Read the story in its entirety, if you like. Or just read the issues featuring the characters who interest you the most!

Iron Man arrives at the scene of the break-out and starts subduing escapees. Hawkeye shows up and believes Iron Man is the cause of the break-out (seeing as he caused the last one during ARMOR WARS). The two Avengers resolve their misunderstanding, apprehend more criminals and get the Guardsmen to safety.

Instead of gaining credit for defeating the Vulture, Rusty and Skids are arrested by Freedom Force. The New Mutants appear to be trapped on Asgard and a mutant terrorist group, the Mutant Liberation Front, attack an energy research facility.
Thor #409[1/2] (tie-in)
Thor takes down some hi-tech bank robbers with ease, but is left with another dizzy spell. Odin only recently merged Thor with architect Eric Masterson to save his life, adding the familiar weakness of transforming from Thor to Eric if he loses contact with his hammer, Mjolnir, for more than 60 seconds. Doctor Doom employs his Time-Bot to steal Thor's hammer in the hope of using its power to free Latveria from Kristoff Vernard's control. With his hammer gone and now stuck in the form of Eric Masterson, Eric asks Hercules to help him get Mjolnir back...

Thor #410[1/2] (tie-in) *
Captain America orders She-Hulk to chaperone Hercules and the poorly disguised Eric Masterson to Latveria when they take an Avengers Quinjet as transport. Doom uses Mjolnir and the Time-Bot to create a 'time displacement cone' around Latveria so he can walk in and reclaim his throne. As Kristoff was given Doom's memories, he assumed Doom (who he believes to be an imposter) would try that approach. The two Dooms clash while She-Hulk, Hercules and Eric Masterson retrieve Mjolnir and destroy the time cone. When Kristoff explains that to destroy him would be to admit failure if he is who he says he is, throwing Doctor Doom off enough to make him leave the battle and reassess. Later, Doom is approached by a mystery man who offers him a chance to have his revenge on Thor with an 'act of vengeance'...
Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #11[1/2]

Of course it's a trap set by the Enchantress, employed to kill Doctor Strange as part of the 'Acts of Vengeance'. Rintrah's illusion is quickly revealed and the real Strange struggles to fend off the new Executioner, but it's Clea's timely arrival that puts an end to the Enchantress' plan when she rescues her husband, Doctor Strange.

Doom demands the Trapster prove he's successfully killed Spider-Man. Peter Parker is almost killed by a power surge during a dubious experiment with Professor Max Lubisch. Confused as to why Doom is attacking him, the Punisher and Microchip travel to Latveria to steal one of Doom's family heirlooms and threaten to destroy it to force him to back off. He drives Tiger Shark away and tries to convince La Bandera to stop using her 'inspiration' powers and return home to Florida. Wolverine breaks into drug lord President Felix Caridad's home and convinces his right-hand man, Geist, to lead him to Roughouse. Instead, Geist (who believes his foe is only posing as the dead Wolverine), leads him underground where Tiger Shark grabs Wolvey and drags him into the water of the filtration system below...
Wolverine #20

Wolverine breaks free and shreds Tiger Shark, sending him back to the sea. Wolverine and La Bandera rescue Roughouse and take him aboard Caridad's helicopter. Tiger Shark attacks the chopper, but Wolverine kicks him into the sharks below. Klaw's been assigned to attract the attention of a different foe, but Quasar quickly contains him having fought him before (during BEHOLD... GALACTUS!). The Living Laser is assigned to freeing Klaw and killing Quasar. He succeeds in releasing Klaw, but suddenly gets pulled up to the moon where he escapes Quasar through one of Uatu the Watcher's viewing portals to an alternate universe (Earth-105709). A week or so ago, Ecstasy (having stolen Cloak's cloak and sucked him inside it) made a move to kill the blinded Dagger, who found herself in the middle of a bank robbery headed up by the Crimson Daffodil. The hitman known as the Disciplinarian also showed up, looking to kill Ecstasy. Cloak escaped the cloak's darkness and reclaimed his powers from Ecstasy. Now, the new Jester approaches Cloak & Dagger and, mistakenly believing them to be villains, recruits them into his Assembly of Evil...

With the team in disarray after their recent losses against the Reavers (during DISSOLUTION & REBIRTH), Blob, Avalanche and Pyro of Freedom Force have made themselves available for hire. Their rampage through what's left of the grounds of Avengers Mansion is halted when Captain America reveals them to be free agents and not government employees. Despite the ultimate loss, the lackey sees this as another win as the Avengers are more confused than before.

Punisher #29
After dinner, 'Doctor Doom' (Kristoff Vernard) gives the Punisher a device that will neutralise Doombots, including the Doom who's been pursuing him in America (who Vernard believes to be a rogue Doombot, rather than the real Doom). That night, the Punisher steals a painting of Doom's parents and flees the castle. Returning to America, Doom attaches a copy of the painting to the top of his Battlevan to draw Doom's attention (passing the Avengers and Freedom Force on the way). Doom confronts the Punisher and promises to leave him alone in exchange for the real painting, costing Doom his wager with the Kingpin.

Kingpin and the lackey confront Doctor Doom over his apparent obsession with Spider-Man. Doom obtains and upgrades the super-soldier hunter robot TESS-One which absorbs Spider-Man's energies while it fights him. MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

WHEN MUTANTS CLASH (1967-1968)

When Captain America leaves Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers start to come apart at the seams. If that wasn't enough, two former-members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants - Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch - are about to leave the Avengers in favour of rejoining their old boss, Magneto . Will there even be a team left? Perhaps they could consider a new member like Dane Whitman -  a guy who can't make up his mind if he's a forward-thinking or an old-school Black Knight .  Magneto has plan to keep an eye on the shipping news and raid boats that pass his mid-Atlantic island base to help finish off his machine that will turn humanity into his mindless slaves. Will the Avengers and the X-Men be too busy fighting each other to thwart this bizarre scheme?
