PORTALS OF POWER (1992)

The Toad leads the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants on a bizarre mission to capture a random guy you'd think was the only teleporter on the planet. But Portal's troubles are just beginning as Darkhawk believes he's the key to his unknown origins and he could also be Sleepwalker's ticket home to the Dreamscape. Add Spider-Man to the mix because it's the early '90s and Wolverine was already appearing in 30 other titles that month, and you've got a recipe for confusion.

Don't expect answers, resolutions or even entertainment in this oddball event that may even be a struggle for the most hardcore '90s Marvel fan...
Darkhawk #19
Having suffered a series of major losses against various X-teams, the Toad plans to kidnap Portal and steal the armour he believes is the source of his teleportation powers. When Darkhawk arrives, Portal has just retrieved his armour from Crestmore Research and the Guardsmen and the Toad's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are fighting over him. Darkhawk, who believes Portal's armour could help him learn his own origins, reveals to the Brotherhood that Portal's a mutant and doesn't use the armour to teleport. Spider-Man joins the melee and the outmatched Brotherhood retreat. As Portal tries to make his exit, Sleepwalker arrives looking for Portal...

Darkhawk #20
Sleepwalker needs Portal's powers to help him get home to the Dreamscape, but Portal teleports away to Fireheart Industries' HQ where he's kidnapped by the Brotherhood. Sauron uses his mind-control powers to make Portal their slave, but he fights their control enough to teleport them to Times Square instead of an arms base. Darkhawk, Sleepwalker and Spider-Man catch up with them, only for Portal to teleport Spidey to the Dark Dimension in the chaos...

Sleepwalker #17
Sleepwalker's host, Rick Sheridan, wakes up, taking Sleepwalker out of the fight. Rick meets fellow tenant Janine Epstein who agrees to go on a date with him later. Rick forces himself back to sleep, releasing Sleepwalker into the waking world and back together with Darkhawk. Together they rescue Portal, convince Dr Charles Warren Fong to free him from Sauron's mind-control and use Portal's powers to pull Spider-Man back out of the Dark Dimension. Neither Darkhawk or Sleepwalker get what they wanted from Portal. Much later, Rick goes on his date with Janine, which is a roaring success until she lures him into an alley where he's surrounded by a Chinese street gang...

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

ISLAND OF THE DAMNED (1972)

It's Halloween, so how's about a little old school werewolf action ?  Around this time, Marvel had a tendency to try new characters out in titles like Marvel Spotlight or Marvel Premiere , then give them their own series if they proved to be popular. However, the characters' first issues often carried on the story from those other books, so you'd pick up issue 1 only to find yourself in the middle of an ongoing tale (for other examples, see Captain Marvel in THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL or Adam Warlock in COUNT-DOWN FOR COUNTER-EARTH ). In the Werewolf By Night 's case, this little two-parter featuring his search for the Darkhold  would flow from Marvel Spotlight into his very own ongoing series. Jack Russell has only recently discovered his true family legacy and that Phillip Russell , the man he believed to be his father, is actually his uncle. His biological father, Baron Gregory Russoff (Phillip's brother), was a magic user and werewolf. Jack inherite...
