The mystery of Mantis' origins are finally revealed when Kang comes to claim the Celestial Madonna as his bride. This strange Avengers tales sees the team travel through time, reveals the connection between Kang, Immortus and Rama-Tut, transforms the Scarlet Witch into an actual witch, brings the wayward Hawkeye back to the Avengers, reveals the 'truth' about the Vision's origin and finishes on a double-wedding that includes a woman marrying a tree.

When I first read this story, I just found it odd and difficult to get through. Now... it's about the same.

Her efforts are interrupted when a dazzling star emerges above Avengers Mansion and Kang the Conqueror arrives...

Avengers #129
Kang's Macrobots defeat the Avengers and hold them in stasis, giving him the chance to explain that the Dawn Star haralds the completeness of the Celestial Madonna, who he believes is either the Scarlet Witch, Agatha Harkness or Mantis. Kang plans to mate with the Madonna and rule the universe through their all-powerful offspring. Kang abducts the Avengers to the pyramid of Rama-Tut (with Kang revealing 'Rama-Tut' to be an earlier identity of his), leaving the Swordsman who he believes to be worthless. With Harkness' telepathic guidance, Swordsman takes a Quinjet to Egypt, breaks into the pyramid, fights his way past the vampire Amenhotep, only to be held back from rescuing his friends by Rama-Tut himself. Kang encases Iron Man, Thor and the Vision in Macrobots and plans on using them to start World War III...

Elsewhere, the Falcon fights crime without Steve Rogers and biker Scar Turpin's career as the new Captain America is very short-lived.

Giant-Size Avengers #2[1/2]
Hawkeye investigates the light above Avengers Mansion and learns the team's fate from Edwin Jarvis. Swordsman returns with Rama-Tut who regrets his pursuit of the Celestial Madonna while he was Kang and has emerged in the present day (after a period of suspended animation since a second period in Ancient Egypt) to preempt his past self's actions to alter time. Swordsman returns with Rama-Tut who transports the unlikely trio to the United Nations Building to stop the Macrobot's attack and free the Vision. They jump to Peking and stop the Macrobot that holds Iron Man. Kang - distracted by Mantis and the Scarlet Witch who argue over the Vision - sends the Thor-Macrobot to kill Hawkeye's team. The Vision enters Kang's vehicle and frees Mantis, the Scarlet WItch and Agatha Harkness. Thor is freed and Rama-Tut confronts Kang directly, causing time to rupture and reveal Mantis as the Celestial Madonna. Refuting Rama-Tut's claims, Kang shoots at Mantis who is saved when Swordsman leaps in her way, dying to save her life. Rama-Tut and Kang's continuing fight triggers Kang's time-ship and sucks them into the timestream.

Mantis asks Vision to forgive her for pursuing him before she sees a vision of the Swordsman. Immortus pulls Kang and Rama-Tut from their battle in the timestream into Limbo, placing Tut in stasis and employing Kang to help him defeat the Avengers. Kang summons candidates from various points time - Frankenstein's Monster, Wonder Man, Midnight, Ghost, Baron Heinrich Zemo and the original Human Torch - to form his Legion of the Unliving and instill fear in the Avengers. Kang then betrays Immortus by trapping him in a tube, then transports the Avengers to Limbo and sends his Legion to destroy them...

Even with one damaged arm, the Vision defeats Wonder Man. Kang teleports out when he realises he's losing. Despite planning on destroying the Avengers, Immortus restores Iron Man and the Vision out of gratitude. When Rama-Tut leaves, Immortus reveals to the Avengers that he, too, is a future version of Kang. He then offers to reveal the origins of Mantis and the Vision...
Avengers #133
Immortus sends the Vision through time with a Synchro-Staff, allowing him to view (but not interfere with) key moments in the history of the original Human Torch. He realises the Torch's memories have been influencing his actions. Thor, Mantis, Iron Man and Hawkeye have another Synchro-Staff that takes them back to the beginning of Kree history. They learn that the peaceful Skrulls visited Hala and offered the indigenous Kree and Cotati their advanced technology if they competed in a contest. The Cotati won, so the Kree retaliated by killing them all, as well as the Skrulls. Back on Earth, the Scarlet Witch now has the power to make furniture come to life but has a darker attitude. In Vietnam, the Hooded One reveals to Swordsman' ghost that he's Libra.

Avengers #134
Thousands of years ago, the barbarian Kree took the Skrull technology after killing the alien visitors, then used it to attack the Skrulls' own world, beginning the Kree-Skrull War which still rages today. Many years later, a group of pacifist Kree called the Priests of Pama discovered the dead Cotati had grown new offspring and formed an alliance with the Priests who took the Cotati all over the known universe to continue to learn and grow and use their telepathic abilities to spread peace. One group landed in Vietnam. Not so long ago, the Mad Thinker used the original Human Torch to attack the Fantastic Four. When his body was laid to rest again, it was discovered by Ultron. Back in the present, Moondragon arrives at Avengers Mansion having picked up their earlier distress call. The Scarlet Witch refuses to help her find the Avengers in favour of her loyalty to Agatha Harkness. She defeats Moondragon and returns to her studies. Thor, Iron Man, Mantis and Hawkeye are transported to present day Vietnam to the grove where thee Swordsman was buried, now knowing that it's actually a grove made up of Cotati. They're greeted by Libra and the ghost of the Swordsman...
Avengers #135
Moondragon arrives in Vietnam and learns from the 'Swordsman' and Libra that both she and Mantis were candidates for the Celestial Madonna, both having been trained by the Priests of Pama. Immortus arrives with a box. Back on Earth, Jarvis discovers the Scarlet Witch has been kidnapped. The Vision learns that Ultron-5 kidnapped Prof Phineas T Horton and employed him to transform the inert Human Torch android into a weapon to use against the Avengers. Horton was killed by Ultron for allowing the new-look Torch to retain his memories and rebel against his new 'master'. Ultron defeated the Torch, erased his personality, replaced his persona with Wonder Man's and sent him on his mission against the Avengers. Having learned the truth, the Synchro-Staff disappears, only for the Vision to be left floating in a void...

Giant-Size Avengers #4[1/3]
The Cotati-animated body of the Swordsman reveals to Mantis that she's the perfect human and they should mate to create the Celestial Messiah. Hawkeye, Iron Man and Thor discover the Titanic Three having been battered into submission by Kang. The three Avengers defeat three future Kang decoys while the 'true' Kang absconds with Mantis, only to discover it to be a disguised Space Phantom. The Vision realises he's at the Earth's core where the Scarlet Witch is being controlled by Dormammu and Umar. When they send her to kill him, the Vision breaks the spell by telling the Scarlet Witch he loves her. The Witch messes with the lava pool that gives Dormammu his power, almost costing him his control over Gaea. He allows the Scarlet Witch, Vision and Agatha Harkness to leave the Dark Dimension and return to Avengers Mansion where the Vision proposes to the Scarlet Witch and she accepts. Agatha Harkness announces the Scarlet Witch's teachings under her are complete. Immortus transports the Vision and Scarlet WItch to Vietnam where a double wedding is held. Immortus officiates the marriage of the Vision and Scarlet Witch and Mantis (having learned her full origin) and the Cotati-animated body of the Swordsman. Mantis and 'Swordsman' take on energy forms and head into space, while the Vision and Scarlet WItch announce their intentions for a honeymoon.
