SAVE A HOWLER (1968)

The version of the super-villain Klaw (Ulysses Klaw) who featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999) appeared to have a bit of a name change, appearing as Ulysses Klaue. This apparent adjustment actually relates back to the character's mainstream Marvel Universe appearances. Not long after Klaw's first appearance, a Nazi character with a similar-sounding name (and missing hand) appeared in Marvel's World War II-centric Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos #39. Colonel Fritz Klaue is later revealed to be Ulysses Klaw's father, who legally changed his name to Fritz Klaw after the war (see the 'Fallout' section below).

In the story SAVE A HOWLER, Colonel Klaue upgrades his metal hand for one with bionic elements. Giving the middle finger is pretty deadly when Klaue gives it to the Howling Commandos. Though his connection to Klaw wasn't established for some time, yet, he still made life difficult for Nick Fury on more than one occasion before the war was over.

In an earlier story, Izzy Cohen of the Howling Commandos was captured by Japanese soldiers. Now, Captain Savage has learned that Izzy is alive and prepares to send the Leatherneck Raiders on a rescue mission...

Thanks to Thomas Trombley for pointing this one out to me!

Captain Sam Sawyer orders Fury not to take the bait, but Dum Dum Dugan and Eric Koenig sneak off to face Klaue in his place and give Fury the credit. Even Klaue's upgraded his metal fist and its array of in-built weapons can't beat Dugan, but he finds himself surrounded by armed troops. Sawyer, Fury and the Howlers arrive in time to rescue Dugan and take Colonel Klaue prisoner. But Sawyer can't let Dugan's actions go unpunished tells him he's be court-martialled.

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

WHEN MUTANTS CLASH (1967-1968)

When Captain America leaves Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers start to come apart at the seams. If that wasn't enough, two former-members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants - Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch - are about to leave the Avengers in favour of rejoining their old boss, Magneto . Will there even be a team left? Perhaps they could consider a new member like Dane Whitman -  a guy who can't make up his mind if he's a forward-thinking or an old-school Black Knight .  Magneto has plan to keep an eye on the shipping news and raid boats that pass his mid-Atlantic island base to help finish off his machine that will turn humanity into his mindless slaves. Will the Avengers and the X-Men be too busy fighting each other to thwart this bizarre scheme?
