Genis' turn as Captain Marvel was meant to last longer than just six issues, but it wasn't a winner with fans. Understandably so, as it's not Fabian Niceiza's finest hour. It left some dangling plot threads which have never been resolved (like the cosmic-level card game Genis was due to have with Thanos and the Grandmaster and the strange goings on on Titan), but Genis would get another crack at a solo series after THE DESTINY WAR.

General Bel-Dann of the Kree asks for Legacy's help to defuse a Nega-Bomb set by Kree rebels hoping to restart the war with the Shi'ar (that originally kicked up during OPERATION: GALACTIC STORM). The request is a ruse and the bomb explodes as soon as Legacy tries to stop it. With two thousand deaths on his conscience, Legacy (Genis-Vell) heads to Earth to find out why he's been set up and clear his name...
Captain Marvel #2
Rick Jones (former partner of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell) convinces Legacy to appear on his TV show and talk about how he was set up, but Rick uses the interview to his advantage and makes fun of Legacy to win ratings. Genis pays visits to his mother, Elysius, the semi-comatose Moondragon and the place where Nitro gave his father cancer.
Eric the Red (Davan Shakari of the Shi'ar) sends Adam-X the X-Treme to kill Legacy, only for them to end up joining forces against him. Eric implies that Adam-X is the son of D'Ken Neramani (the Shi'ar Emperor who went mad) and a human mother (most likely Katherine Summers) and that it was his destiny to rule the Shi'ar. Eric the Red and his Crystal Claws fanatics set Legacy up to weaken the Shi'ar, allowing him to make his move to remove Empress Lilandra and rule from behind Adam-X. Legacy and Adam-X destroy Eric's ship, leaving his fate uncertain.
Legacy takes down the Kree Peace Battalion who set him up on behalf of Eric the Red. He confronts their leader, Zey-Rogg, who blames Mar-Vell for the death of his father, Yon-Rogg (see THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK). Genis defeats Zey-Rogg and gently breaks the news to Zey's son, Hav-Rogg. Genis srops the name Legacy and finally becomes Captain Marvel. On planet Carmondy IV, a Celestial-powered Godstalker threatens to destroy the world's god...

The last survivor of Carmondy IV petitions the new Captain Marvel to avenge her people to took their lives when the Godkiller stole their god, Veeda Leebre. Genis frees the essense of Veeda Leebre which is trapped in the Godstalker's prison for wayward gods and returns Veeda Leebre to the corpse-stricken Carmondy IV. Elsewhere, the Grandmaster challenges Thanos to a card game...
Veeda Leebre resurrects the inhabitants of Carmondy IV who are unaware that they were all dead. Disturbed by this, Captain Marvel reveals the truth to the real last survivor who then takes her life. Veeda Leebre returns the inhabitants to death, leaving Captain Marvel uncertain that he did the right thing. On Titan, Elysius falls ill...
Avengers Unplugged #6
The Controller attaches a slave disc to the Earth-bound Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau of the Avengers) and sends her out to capture the new Captain Marvel, Genis-Vell. With help from Starfox, Deathcry and the VIsion, the disc is removed and the Avengers and Genis take down the Controller, but don't know who he's working for. Afterwards, Monica allows Genis to keep the 'Captain Marvel' name as it's his legacy, taking on the new codename Photon for herself.
While Drax the Destroyer and Pip the Troll watch over her inert form on life-support, Moondragon feels guilty over Drax's diminished mental state (a state she caused when she killed his first Chronos-created body). She astrally projects herself and Drax in front of Chronos and demands he restore Drax's mind.
After initially rejecting their plea, Chronos agrees to help them. Moondragon gives up some of her mental power to restore Drax's mind (admitting to him that she killed him while she wasn't in control of her actions) and Drax gives up some of his strength to heal Moondragon's body.
Syphonn re-animates Mar-Vell's corpse and forces it to kill Elysius.

In a flashback, Bloodwing of the Crystal Claws tries to kill Genis-Vell to enable his sister's soul to pass on to the next life; Genis fakes his own death, allowing Bloodwing to believe he's succeeded.

Having lost his mind after gaining Cosmic Awareness, Genis helps Entropy destroy the universe; Rick Jones and Genis help Entropy recreate the universe (despite Genis' earlier moral issues with Veeda Leebre); Entropy becomes the new Eternity.

One of the differences in the new universe created by Entropy is that Elysius is still alive; it's revealed that Elysius created a sister for Genis, Phyla-Vell; Phyla takes on the mantle of Captain Marvel.

Still as Captain Marvel, Genis joins the Thunderbolts during AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED.

After his powers began to change, Genis drops the Captain Marvel name and becomes Photon.
