PUNISHER READING ORDER: Frank Castle (1974-1989)

The next character to get a reading order spotlight (as voted for by the Marvel Comics Guide followers on Instagram) is Frank Castle... the Punisher. Frank's mission to kill criminals goes way beyond revenge over the slaughter of his family. His one-man war on crime sometimes brings him into conflict with other characters in the Marvel Universe, but he's at his most interesting when he's just killing day-to-day criminals in the ultimate revenge fantasy.

This first part spotlights the Punisher's earliest appearances alongside Spider-Man, before he branched out into other corners of the Marvel Universe; facing the likes of Daredevil, Moon Knight and Doctor Doom. In the mid-80s, he was granted his own mini-series, quickly followed by his own ongoing and a second ongoing to meet demand! I've also included his origin mini-series from the '90s, though I actually believe the Punisher's origin becomes less relevant over time.

As always, I'd like to thank the guys over at the Marvel Chronology Project which I use as a basis and then work out my own version of the Marvel Universe continuity. Those guys have done all the heavy lifting for me!

MCG Note:

  • Issues in blue are worth reading, are major chapters the Punisher's history or may play a key part in the great Marvel tapestry.
  • Issues in grey are part of the Punisher's chronology, stories of note that aren't essential or are no longer considered 'required reading'.

MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

WHEN MUTANTS CLASH (1967-1968)

When Captain America leaves Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Avengers start to come apart at the seams. If that wasn't enough, two former-members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants - Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch - are about to leave the Avengers in favour of rejoining their old boss, Magneto . Will there even be a team left? Perhaps they could consider a new member like Dane Whitman -  a guy who can't make up his mind if he's a forward-thinking or an old-school Black Knight .  Magneto has plan to keep an eye on the shipping news and raid boats that pass his mid-Atlantic island base to help finish off his machine that will turn humanity into his mindless slaves.
