The Russian Government hold Natasha Romanova's family hostage to coerce her into donning fishnets and a mask and killing Iron Man. With a costume that enables her to act like her namesake, the Black Widow returns to America and convinces Hawkeye to hep her kidnap Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan. Iron Man focuses on rescuing his friends, allowing Hawkeye and the Black Widow to escape.

The race is on between the X-Men and the Brotherhood to Evil Mutants to find the newest, most powerful mutant to emerge, so far. Magneto gets to the Stranger first, but his attempts to impress him backfire. The Stranger turns Mastermind to stone and Magneto abandons Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in favour of his potential ally. The twins decide their debt to Magneto is paid and escape to Europe. The Stranger reveals himself to be from an alien race who collect mutants and takes Magneto and the Toad with him when he leaves Earth. Cerebro then alerts the X-Men to the newest, most powerful mutant to emerge, so far...
Baron Heinrich Zemo gathers every member of the Masters of Evil into one team and kidnaps Rick Jones in his final bid for revenge on Captain America. While the Avengers have an almost surreal battle with the Masters on and above the streets of New York City, Captain America tracks Zemo to his Amazon headquarters. After freeing Rick, Cap sets up a rockslide that falls when Zemo shoots randomly, killing the evil mastermind in the process...

The Enchantress and Executioner evade capture while Thor transports the Melter and the Black Knight to another dimension where the Avengers apprehend them. Later, Thor heads off to deal with issues in Asgard while Iron Man, Giant-Man and the Wasp meet up and decide to take their leave of the Avengers, acknowledging (and completely accepting) that Captain America is still missing. Hawkeye makes a bid to join the team by breaking into Avengers Mansion and tying up Jarvis. By the time Cap and Rick Jones return from the Amazon, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch have been accepted as members and the entire line-up has changed. Iron Man advises Cap to lead the new team on a search for the Hulk...
