NEW BLOOD (1982)

These two issues can be read individually, but there's a lack of closure to Dazzler's team-up with Spider-Woman that isn't tied up until the Wasp offers to recruit them into the Avengers. Dazzler's been trying to locate her long-lost mother and, when a vague hint that she might be in San Fransisco emerges, she hires Jessica Drew to investigate. Things take a deadly turn, of course, leaving a little bad blood between the two.

Which leads us nicely into the Wasp's decision to recruit two new members into the ranks of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. She (and that slimy Tony Stark) would like more female members. Captain America wonders if they should see if any of their former allies would like to return. But Thor thinks maybe it's time to get some new blood into the Avengers, and he has a candidate in mind...

It's gotta be said, the line-up change issues of Avengers are undeniably fun. I wasn't much of an Avengers fan as a kid, but I always picked up the issues that shook the team up to find out who'd make it into Earth's Mightiest!

Dazzler #15
When he tour hits San Fransisco, Dazzler (Alison Blaire) hires private investigator Jessica Drew (who she met during AND THE DEAD SHALL BURY THE LIVING) to look into clues that may reunite Daz with her long lost mother. She continues to look into it herself, believing Jessica's heart isn't in it. Their investigations collide under the Transamerica Pyramid building where Jessica (now in her Spider-Woman guise) and Dazzler fall into a series of deathtraps. They barely survive the experience and learn that what they'd discovered was a secret SHIELD training facility. Spider-Woman advises Dazzler to leave it to the professionals in future.

Avengers #221

Down to just four members, the Avengers decide it's time to get two more recruits. Thor offers a position to Spider-Man who promises to consider it. Iron Man and Captain America ask Hawkeye if he'd like to return which, of course, her accepts. The Wasp gathers a number of female friends - Dazzler, Spider-Woman (still showing animosity towards each other now that Dazzler's decided to look into her mother's whereabouts alone), the Invisible Woman, Black Widow and She-Hulk - who accept an invitation for tea at the Wasp's house. X-MEN READING ORDER: Children of the Atom (1963-1970)

Who knew they'd end up being one of Marvel's biggest franchises? The X-Men (originally intended to be launched as 'The Mutants') were created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and really focused heavily on the Marvel vibe of teenage outsiders. Despite the presence of regular nemesis Magneto (now one of Marvel's premiere villains), interactions with the rest of the Marvel Universe and a career-defining run by artist Neal Adams, the teens didn't really click with the audience and the series was cancelled after 66 issues. It ran as a reprint title, rerunning its own stories until issue 94. In this reading order, I've listed every appearance of the five X-Men members - along with their mentor, Professor X - from their first appearance right up to their cancellation. Their defining moments and key interactions with Spider-Man , the Avengers , Fantastic Four and other receive the spotlight treatment, but you can pick and choose whatever you want to read. It's up

WRAITH WAR (1984-1985)

Countless years ago, the Celestials messed about with the Skulls ' gene pool and, among other things, created an offshoot of Deviant Skrulls called Dire Wraiths . These warped and murderous magic users were chased off their home to the world and found a new home in the Dark Nebula , naming their new home Wraithworld . Then, just two hundred years ago, the Dire Wraiths invaded Galador , only to get their saggy arses kicked across the universe by the Galadorian Spaceknights . The Spaceknights spread out across the galaxies, hunting the Dire Wraiths as they tried to invade other planets. One such cyborg Spaceknight, Rom , came to Earth to end the threat they posed to our world. Most people perceived Rom as a rampaging alien toaster-bot, as the Wraiths used magic to disguise themselves as human and Rom lost a little of his humanity over the centuries.  But he'd run into many of Earth heroes during his time on Earth, and made friends with serial sidekick Rick Jones and found lov
