SECOND GENESIS (1974-1975)

After 66 issues, Marvel had accepted that the X-Men just didn't resonate with fans the way they'd hoped. In 1970, the team of teenage mutants were relegated to guest appearances in more popular characters' titles while their own series reprinted their earlier adventures.

Four years later, we were introduced to a scrappy Canadian mutant who would herald the arrival of an all-new, all-different team if X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1 the following year with a more international feel. The X-Men won their own title back and the rest is history!
[WOLVERINE READING ORDER: Before the X-Men]
  • Incredible Hulk #180-181
  • Incredible Hulk #182 (tie-in)
  • Giant-Size X-Men #1[1/3]
  • X-Men #94-95
Incredible Hulk #180
When the Hulk leaps back into Canada, a secret military installation mobilises Weapon X against him. He eventually stumbles on Marie Cartier who plans to free her brother from the Wendigo curse by magically switching his mind with the Hulk's. Hulk wakes up before she can make the switch and a fight with the Wendigo breaks out. As they literally go head-to-head, 'Weapon X' emerges and introduces himself as the Wolverine. Back in America, Hulkbuster Base One prepares for the arrival of President Gerald Ford and his meeting with Glenn Talbot...

Incredible Hulk #181
Wolverine attacks the Wendigo first, making Hulk believe he's an ally. When they're done taking the monster down together, Wolverine turns on the Hulk. Marie Cartier uses a spell to knock them both out, but her friend Georges Baptiste refuses to allow the transfer to happen when Hulk changes back to Bruce Banner. Georges sneaks away and performs the transfer himself, taking Paul Cartier's place as the Wendigo. Hulk knocks Wolverine out and comforts the devastated Marie Cartier...
Incredible Hulk #182 (tie-in)
Canadian commando troops pull Wolverine out and attack and cage the Hulk. He soon breaks free and meets travelling hobo Crackerjack Jackson who feeds Hulk and teaches him to write his own name. Elsewhere, an alien from Glx grants superhuman powers to escaped convicts - Leroy 'Hammer' Jackson and John Anvil - enforcing their chain which now gives them super powers. Hulk helps Crackerjack reunite with his son who turns out to be 'Hammer' Jackson. Crackajack dies when he touches Hammer and Anvil's link and the Hulk breaks it and takes Crackajack's body away for burial.

Giant-Size X-Men #1[1/3]
Cyclops returns from a dangerous mission to locate a new mutant. The X-Men have been lost which prompts Professor X to form a new team to return to the island of Krakoa and rescue them. Cyclops and the new recruits, Wolverine, Banshee, Nightcrawler, Storm, Sunfire and Thunderbird discover Krakoa itself is sentient. The original X-Men are rescued and the mutants combine their powers to launch Krakoa into Earth's orbit and escape.
X-Men #94
Most of the original X-Men and Sunfire decide to leave the X-Men, but Cyclops stays and trains the new recruits over the course of several weeks. Beast (Hank McCoy, now a member of the Avengers) contacts the X-Men when Count Nefaria and his Ani-Men take over the US military's Valhalla Base in Colorado, threatening to launch nuclear missiles unless the world pays him a ransom. With the Avengers already dealing with other threats, the X-Men fly to Valhalla Base. Nefaria's disruptor beam bkinsk the X-Jet out of existence, leaving the X-Men falling to their deaths...

X-Men #95
Teamwork helps the X-Men land safely and break into Valhalla Base. Knock-out gas weakens the X-Men and makes the Ani-Man harder to defeat, but their battle disables the doomsday clock and ends the threat. Thunderbird and Banshee give chase when Nefaria escapes, but Thunderbird's assault on Nefaria's jet makes it crash. Professor X telepathically feels Thunderbird's death. The X-Men win but at the cost of one of their team.

MCG Note: I won't be running every major story the new X-Men have an impact on as the list could go on forever! But I've chosen a few key tales for each character.

X-MEN READING ORDER: Children of the Atom (1963-1970)

Who knew they'd end up being one of Marvel's biggest franchises? The X-Men (originally intended to be launched as 'The Mutants') were created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and really focused heavily on the Marvel vibe of teenage outsiders. Despite the presence of regular nemesis Magneto (now one of Marvel's premiere villains), interactions with the rest of the Marvel Universe and a career-defining run by artist Neal Adams, the teens didn't really click with the audience and the series was cancelled after 66 issues. It ran as a reprint title, rerunning its own stories until issue 94. In this reading order, I've listed every appearance of the five X-Men members - along with their mentor, Professor X - from their first appearance right up to their cancellation. Their defining moments and key interactions with Spider-Man , the Avengers , Fantastic Four and other receive the spotlight treatment, but you can pick and choose whatever you want to read. It's up

WRAITH WAR (1984-1985)

Countless years ago, the Celestials messed about with the Skulls ' gene pool and, among other things, created an offshoot of Deviant Skrulls called Dire Wraiths . These warped and murderous magic users were chased off their home to the world and found a new home in the Dark Nebula , naming their new home Wraithworld . Then, just two hundred years ago, the Dire Wraiths invaded Galador , only to get their saggy arses kicked across the universe by the Galadorian Spaceknights . The Spaceknights spread out across the galaxies, hunting the Dire Wraiths as they tried to invade other planets. One such cyborg Spaceknight, Rom , came to Earth to end the threat they posed to our world. Most people perceived Rom as a rampaging alien toaster-bot, as the Wraiths used magic to disguise themselves as human and Rom lost a little of his humanity over the centuries.  But he'd run into many of Earth heroes during his time on Earth, and made friends with serial sidekick Rick Jones and found lov
