DISSOLUTION & REBIRTH (1989)

If you thought the X-Men were sombre before, watch what happens when they all die!

The world believed the X-Men died fight the Adversary (during FALL OF THE MUTANTS), but instead, they'd been given a second chance at living. Having beaten the Reavers out of their Australian Outback headquarters, the team have focused on acting as a strike team - getting in and out of missions around the globe with the help of the mutant teleporter Gateway

Wolverine's been going off on secret solo missions and Madelyne Pryor's betrayal (during INFERNO) has hit the team hard, especially Havok. To make matters worse, it looks like fate itself is conspiring against them. The X-Men are about to die all over again. Will it be for real, this time? Will Wolverine stick around long enough to be of any use to his team mates? Or will it all be up to mallrat Jubilee who's been hiding in their base, right under their noses?

Wolverine #17
Storm waves off Wolverine (Logan) as he sets off on another solo mission, this time resuming his 'Patch' identity in Madripoor where he immediately defeats Roughouse again. General Coy sells Roughouse to a shadowy figure called Geist for his failure. The cyborg Geist plans to fuel Roughouse with a brand of cocaine that drives the user super-humanly strong, but utterly insane. Believing it to be a fate too low for even an enemy like Roughouse, Wolverine boards Geist's ship to stage a rescue...

Wolverine #18
Geist shaves Roughouse and reveals the scars from his father's beatings, preparing him for the cocaine which will turn him into a super hero for his boss, President Felix Guillermo Caridad of Sierra Verde. Wolverine frees Roughouse, but the rage induced by the cocaine makes him uncontrollable. He beats Wolverine senseless and the mutant is thrown overboard where he's rescued by Tyger Tiger and O'Donnell. In Tierra Verde, Felix Caridad coerces his ex-wife, Sister Salvation, to leave her role as a nun and return to him by blowing up the village she was helping. He plans to use her healing powers on Roughouse to get his cocaine-fuelled powers under control...

Uncanny X-Men #246
The Siege Perlious shows Dazzler multiple visions of her lives that could have been, all ending in early death. Wolverine recovers from his mission in Madripoor and heads off to Sierra Verde. Carol Danvers' persona has taken control of Rogue again as she and Psylocke return to Manhattan to pick up some of her old stuff, including her Ms Marvel costume. The Master Mold Sentinel merges with Nimrod and rampages through the city. 'Carol' dons the Ms Marvel costume, but is knocked into Senator Robert Kelly's limo. His new wife, Sharon Kelly, comes to her rescue. Master Mold/Nimrod blasts the limo, mortally wounding Sharon...

Wolverine #19
Wolverine arrives in Sierra Verde and immediately gets caught up in a conflict between the revolutionary La Bandera and Kingpin's enforcer, Tiger Shark. He drives Tiger Shark away and tries to convince La Bandera to stop using her 'inspiration' powers and return home to Florida. Wolverine breaks into Caridad's home and convinces Geist to lead him to Roughouse. Instead, Geist (who believes his foe is only posing as the dead Wolverine), leads him underground where Tiger Shark grabs Wolvey and drags him into the water of the filtration system below...

Uncanny X-Men #247
Gateway sends the X-Men to Manhattan after Psylocke's summons. Rogue is back in control of her body, disgusted to be wearing Carol's Ms Marvel costume. The X-Men destroy the Master Mold, but it regenerates using Nimrod's tech. Rogue absorbs Colossus' powers and flies into Master Mold from a great height. When it begins to regenerate again, Dazzler tries to draw it into the Siege Perilous, only for Rogue to get sucked in, too, with a blast from Dazzler. Robert Kelly renews his hatred for mutants when Sharon dies and asks Sebastian Shaw to start Project: Nimrod. Jubilee continues to sneak around the X-Men's Outback hideout. The Reavers watch the unfolding events, as Nanny watches the Reavers...

Wolverine #20
Tiger Shark embeds Wolverine claws in a coral reef and leaves him to drown. La Bandera's return to the revolution is intercepted by Geist and Tiger Shark who kill most of her followers. Sister Salvation uses her healing powers on Roughouse. Wolverine breaks free and shreds Tiger Shark, sending him back to the sea. Wolverine and La Bandera rescue Roughouse and take him and Sister Salvation aboard Caridad's helicopter. Tiger Shark attacks the chopper, but Wolverine kicks him into the sharks below. It looks like good has prevailed, but Wolverine is riddled with darts fired by Geist that contain the madness-inducing cocaine...

Uncanny X-Men #248
Donald Pierce has taken over the Reavers and allied with Lady Deathstrike and her cyborg minions to take on the X-Men. Longshot leaves the team, making them more vulnerable. Nanny and Orphan-Maker decide to capture them to save their lives. Psylocke, Dazzler and Havok are caught first, physically transformed into children, given robotic armour and sent to capture Colossus and Storm. Colossus frees his team mates, returning them to adulthood. Storm goes after Nanny's fleeing ship, only for Havok to blow it up and Storm along with it.

Wolverine #21
Psylocke tries and fails to contact Wolverine telepathically. Geist leads Felix Caridad's men after Wolverine, who slowly falls prey to the power of the cocaine. The cocaine is revealed to be a living disease created by the Deviants, calling itself Spore. While Sister Salvation tries to heal Wolverine's body, he fights Spore in his mind. Wolverine wins out, but Salvation alerts Geist to their presence so that she can be reunited with her son...

Uncanny X-Men #249
The Reavers prepare to attack the X-Men, including Havok who's wracked with guilt over killing Storm. They receive a message from Polaris (Lorna Dane) who seems to be free of Malice's control. They track the call to Chile where Lorna is kidnapped by the Savage Land Mutates. The X-Men convince Zala Dane - the High Evolutionary's assistant (during THE EVOLUTIONARY WAR), now calling herself Zaladane - and her Mutates to leave Chile. Havok disguises himself as one of Zaladane's soldiers and returns with them to the Savage Land...

Uncanny X-Men #250
Zaladane unleashes a tower in Antarctica that contains a Transmutator device created by the High Evolutionary. Havok fails to stop Zaladane from using the Transmutator to steal Lorna Dane's magnetic powers. Psylocke receives a vision from Gateway in the middle of the X-Men's rescue mission, revealing that the team will die. Lorna learns Zaladane is her sister and breaks free, exhibiting new super-strength and invulnerability powers. The X-Men free Ka-Zar, Shanna and the other captured inhabitants of the Savage Land - destroying Zaladane's headquarters in the process - before Gateway teleports them home.

Wolverine #22
Felix Caridad takes a break from torturing Wolverine and Roughouse to reunite Sister Salvation with their son, Palo Caridad. Felix wants to infect Palo with the cocaine to turn him into Tierra Verde's super-hero, with Sister Salvation keeping the power of the cocaine under control. Wolverine and Roughouse break out and Felix is shot with the cocaine in the melee. La Bandera returns with an army as Spore takes full control of Felix Caridad's body and consumes Wolverine...

Wolverine #23
Wolverine breaks free and continues to fight Spore alongside Bandera. The more people Spore consumes, the bigger he gets. Sister Salvation touches the gigantic Deviant creature and melts him away to nothing with her mutant powers. Wolverine shreds Geist's cyborg parts, but he's taken to safety by the CIA. La Bandera struggles to make the most of Sierra Verde's newfound freedom. Wolverine returns to Madripoor and ridicucles General Coy and Prince Baran by making them run from fake spore-cocaine in the Madripoor sewers. He then heads back to the X-Men's hideout to reunite with the team. In Washington, Magneto catches up with Geist and takes him away to kill him...

Uncanny X-Men #251
Days ago, when the four X-Men returned to the Outback, Psylocke chose to defy their destiny by using her telepathic abilities to coerce the team into going through the Siege Perilous again, narrowly avoiding death at the Reavers' cyborg hands. When Wolverine returned, the Reavers had taken the base. They mercilessly attacked Wolverine and crucified him to a giant wooden X, letting the Australian sun keep him subdued. Gateway relays the events of the past week and the end of the X-Men to Wolverine. Donald Pierce destroys the Siege Perilous so Wolverine can never follow. Jubilee watches as Wolverine tears himself down from the X in the middle of a storm. Weakened more than ever before, he asks for her help...
Uncanny X-Men #252
The Reavers scour the base for Wolverine who lies unconscious in Jubilee's den. Lady Deathstrike later finds it empty. Wolverine and Jubilee escape Donald Pierce's cyborg dingos and bury Pierce himself in a tunnel as they make their escape...

Uncanny X-Men #253
A girl is found wandering in the middle of a storm in Mississippi and gets her to an ambulance. The mutant girl (who looks like Storm, only about 10 years old) doesn't show up on any scanners. Dr Lian Shen calls FBI agent Jacob Reisz to report the mutant girl. Lady Deathstrike is allowing Wolverine and Jubilee to escape so she can fight him at his best. On Muir Isle, Moira MacTaggart confronts Magneto over his apparent return to villainy. She sends Callisto to America to shut down access to the Xavier School's underground chambers before Magneto can get to them. Lorna Dane puts a call through to Muir Isle when everyone abord the ship she's on start killing each other. Banshee comes to her rescue as the ship sinks. Forge barely fends off Amahl Farouk/the Shadow King on the psychic plane. Amanda Sefton goes looking for Nightcrawler (unaware that Excalibur are lost in time) and finds Brigadier Alysande Stuart, instead. Donald Pierce orders the Reavers to attack Muir Isle in search of Wolverine...

Uncanny X-Men #254
The Reavers shoot Banshee whose life is saved by Amanda Sefton's magic. They teleport to Muir Isle where they prepare for an attack. Moira gives costumes to the inhabitants of Muir Isle (unofficially making them the Muir Island X-Men) as they fend off the Reavers. The Healer restores Banshee, just as Sunder is killed by Pretty Boy. Legion seems to be fighting both sides! In America, the precog Destiny has a premonition of her own demise just as the rest of Freedom Force are sent to defend Muir Isle, despite Mystique's reluctance to work with Forge who she blames for Rogue's 'death'. Before Callisto could reach the Xavier School's underground complex, she's taken prisoner by Masque who now leads the Morlocks...

Uncanny X-Men #255
Banshee and the super-strong Lorna Dane are defeated by the Reavers. Freedom Force join the fray, but Legion takes away Pyro's flame and kills Destiny. Pierce kills Stonewall, but Forge kills Skullbuster. The outnumbered Reavers teleport away. Mystique leaves Forge behind, blaming him for Destiny's death. Banshee and Forge agree to find the X-Men. In the South China Sea, Matsu'o Tsurayaba of the Hand has found Psylocke, wiped of any memory of who she was. MARVEL MONSTERS (2005)

One of Marvel's fifth-week events from 2005 centred around the classic Marvel Monsters that would invade the pages of Strange Tales , Journey into Mystery , Amazing Adventures , Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense every month, before the age of heroes. While it was an okay event at best, the four one-shots finally established that those behemoths from outer space and other dimensions did actually inhabit the Marvel Universe ! The highlight is the Hulk 's clash with Devil Dinosaur (a character who was first introduced in the 1970s), but we also found out what some of these creatures had been up to since their early '60 debuts, an untold tale of the time some of the Marvel U's more monstrous heroes gathered to fight them and, finally, the introduction of the  Fin Fang Four ! The featured stories aren't connected and most issues also featured reprints of classic Marvel Monster tales. Marvel Monsters: Devil Dinosaur #1 [1/2] Marvel Monsters: Monsters on the Prow...

ISLAND OF THE DAMNED (1972)

It's Halloween, so how's about a little old school werewolf action ?  Around this time, Marvel had a tendency to try new characters out in titles like Marvel Spotlight or Marvel Premiere , then give them their own series if they proved to be popular. However, the characters' first issues often carried on the story from those other books, so you'd pick up issue 1 only to find yourself in the middle of an ongoing tale (for other examples, see Captain Marvel in THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL or Adam Warlock in COUNT-DOWN FOR COUNTER-EARTH ). In the Werewolf By Night 's case, this little two-parter featuring his search for the Darkhold  would flow from Marvel Spotlight into his very own ongoing series. Jack Russell has only recently discovered his true family legacy and that Phillip Russell , the man he believed to be his father, is actually his uncle. His biological father, Baron Gregory Russoff (Phillip's brother), was a magic user and werewolf. Jack inherite...
