Black Tom Cassidy has been holding a bunch of hostages at the World Trade Centre and opened a portal to another dimension to bring his old buddy, the Juggernaut , back to Earth (during A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH ). Whatever his long-tern plan was, it's been interrupted by Cable 's new paramilitary mutant unit, X-Force . Love him or hate him, Rob Liefeld's art on the New Mutants bumped that its popularity up when it was floundering. So much so, that Liefeld and new series writer Fabian Nicieza got to move the series in a (theoretically) completely new direction when the former students of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters were transformed into X-Force by the mystery mutant called Cable . X-Force would represent a new, no-nonsense approach to saving mutantkind in the early '90s, matching the decade's initial desire for darker, grittier comics. With Marvel Comics still aligning themselves with the Comics Code Authority , we didn't necessarily get the bodycount we were promised. We did, however, get our first taste of brand-new X-Men mainstays like Deadpool , Domino (sort of), Shatterstar , Feral , Gideon , Kane , GW Bridge and the first hints of Mr Tolliver and Tyler (coincidence? The elements of a shared universe come together again, with the
