A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH (1991)

Love him or hate him, Rob Liefeld's art on the New Mutants bumped that its popularity up when it was floundering. So much so, that Liefeld and new series writer Fabian Nicieza got to move the series in a (theoretically) completely new direction when the former students of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters were transformed into X-Force by the mystery mutant called Cable.

X-Force would represent a new, no-nonsense approach to saving mutantkind in the early '90s, matching the decade's initial desire for darker, grittier comics. With Marvel Comics still aligning themselves with the Comics Code Authority, we didn't necessarily get the bodycount we were promised. We did, however, get our first taste of brand-new X-Men mainstays like Deadpool, Domino (sort of), Shatterstar, Feral, Gideon, Kane, GW Bridge and the first hints of Mr Tolliver and Tyler (coincidence? Maybe the Genesis of one). When Liefeld jumped ship to form Image Comics, Nicieza stayed on and continued to turn these characters into the ones we're more familiar with today.

A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH leads into a sideways two-parter with Spider-Man called SABOTAGE...
[HOME! - Cable becomes the New Mutants' mentor]
[X-TINCTION AGENDA - Wolfsbane leaves the New Mutants, death of Warlock]
  • New Mutants #98-100
  • X-Force #1-3 (also see MUTANT GENESIS)
New Mutants #98
Beneath the rubble of what was once the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, Cable shows off some new skills in the Danger Room with his cyborg arm, but soon comes under attack from a mercenary calling himself Deadpool. The New Mutants try to take him down, but it's an old friend of Cable's called Domino who finally succeeds. Cable mails Deadpool back to his boss, Mr Tolliver, and assesses the past and present members of the New Mutants with Domino. Gideon arranges for the death of Emmanuel da Costa, then breaks into the underground levels of the Xavier School to deliver the news of his death to his son, Sunspot (Roberto da Costa). Rictor leaves the New Mutants in favour of going to Genosha to rescue their old team mate, Wolfsbane...

New Mutants #99
Cable offers a place among the New Mutants to Warpath (Thunderbird's little brother and a former enemy of the X-Men and New Mutants). Gideon convinces Sunspot to leave the New Mutants and head up his father's company, Da Costa International, unaware of his friend's sinister agenda. Cable's focus shifts to turning the New Mutants into para-military unit. Warpath learns his people have been murdered by Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club and agrees to join the team. A Morlock called Feral escapes Masque's leadership and makes her way into the New Mutants' headquarters. An unconscious warrior materialises on the floor of the Danger Room...
New Mutants #100
Warpath and his new allies subdue Shatterstar when he regains consciousness in the Danger Room, explaining himself as a time-lost warrior from Mojoworld's future. Boom-Boom finds Feral who begs for the New Mutants' protection from Masque. Warrior constructs teleport in to claim Shatterstar, but they're fended off by him, Feral and the New Mutants.

Masque and two muscular Morlocks then attack until Cable shoots one dead to warn Masque off. Cable gives the New Mutants and their new allies a pep talk, announcing his decision to find a new headquarters. Cannonball dubs the team X-Force. Elsewhere, Stryfe sends the Mutant Liberation Front on a mission and, when they leave, unmasks to reveal Cable's face...
X-Force #1
Six months later, X-Force's second mission (following their clash with Proteus during KINGS OF PAIN) sees them fail to apprehend Stryfe when they roust an MLF base. They leave having cost Stryfe a headquarters, unaware that SHIELD agent GW Bridge is on their trail. Bridge decides the only way to capture Cable is to call in Weapon X.

In their new hideout in the Adirondacks, Cable reveals to Cannonball how a young warrior named Tyler who had become like a son to him was turned against him by Stryfe. When Cannonball leaves, Cable displays his mutant telekinetic powers for the first time, but keeps them secret from X-Force.

Gideon hones Sunspot's skills as both warrior and businessman. They attend a meeting at the World Trade Centre where Black Tom Cassidy takes everyone present hostage...
X-Force #2
Three days later, the current Weapon X (Garrison Kane) foils an illegal operation headed up by Deadpool for Mr Tolliver. GW Bridge arrives and tries to recruit Kane, allowing Deadpool to escape while they talk. Kane turns Bridge down. Feral guts Cannonball during X-Force's training session. On top of the World Trade Centre, Black Tom Cassidy fires up a device that opens a portal to the dimension where the Juggernaut was stranded, returning him to Earth...

X-Force #3
Banshee's daughter, Siryn, confront the Juggernaut and her uncle, Black Tom, on the roof of one of the twin towers. When she's forced back, she's picked up by X-Force. Warpath knocks Juggernaut off the building, sending them both crashing to the streets below. Black Tom fends off Gideon and Sunspot's attack, then sets off a bomb when Cable threatens to shoot him down. Spider-Man arrives in time to see one of the twin towers exploding...

AVENGERS READING ORDER: Before the Avengers (1962-1963)

I'll openly admit to not really being a fan of the '60s comics. No one should feel obligated to go back to the very beginning to understand the Marvel Universe , no matter what anyone tells you. But, for those of you who love that era or are just plain curious about it, I present to you the earliest appearances of Ant-Man , Hulk , Thor , Iron Man and the Wasp. Five heroes who go on to become Earth's Mightiest... After this little run down of their early days, you'd be looking to pick up the very first issue of their team book when they become the Avengers ! See how they gain their unique powers, fight Communists, fend off alien invasions, fight Communists, face odd arch nemeses and fight Communists. As always, I'd like to thank the guys over at www.chronologyproject.com which I use as a basis and work out my own continuity. Those guys have done all the heavy lifting for me! MCG Note: Issues in  blue  are worth reading or introduce the characters who play are larg...

EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HERO (2012)

OK, so you don't need to read the Avenging Spider-Man issues listed below, but issue Avenging Spider-Man # 9 came out a week before Captain Marvel #1 , making it Carol Danvers '  first appearance as Captain Marvel . Plus her odd, pseudo-flirtatious relationship with Peter Parker continues in that series and the storyline is also written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, writer of Carol's solo Captain Marvel series. Carol Danvers first appeared as a love interest for the original Captain Marvel (the Kree hero Mar-Vell ) before gaining Kree powers from exposure to the Psyche-Magnitron and becoming Ms Marvel . From there, she lost her powers and emotions to Rogue , gained different powers to become Binary , returned to her Ms Marvel costume but took the name Warbird , then returned as Ms Marvel once again. Isn't it time she jus took on the Captain Marvel mantle? [THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL - Carol Danvers' first appearance] Captain Marvel #1 Avenging Spider-Man #9-10 C...
