MARVEL UNIVERSE: 2005 READING ORDER - Recommended & Essential Reading

The Marvel Universe reading order continues: Highlighting all the key moments, first appearances, crossovers and events in the ideal reading order. This time around... 2005!

As always, I'd like to thank the guys over at www.chronologyproject.com which I use as a basis and work out my own continuity. Those guys have done all the heavy lifting for me!

MCG Note: These pages are subject to change and will be constantly updated and added to. If you feel a story has been missed or want to know where tale would sit in continuity, I'm more than happy to add these for you, though they may or may not be recommended by me. This guide is aimed more at fans who need help with continuity and the stories they need to read, rather than those already obsessed with it.
The Marvel Universe starts to become a much more coherent place in 2005, after spending a good few years allowing its characters to flourish in their own titles. The elements of a shared universe come together again, with the New Avengers leading the charge. Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage and Sentry become Avengers for the first time, with Wolverine joining in the hope of making amends for his period as a Hand assassin. Also, Iron Man first comes into contact with Extremis, Captain America meets the Winter Soldier and the X-Men fall out with Professor X like never before.

In some of the more obscure highlights, Jamie Madrox becomes a private investigator, the Great Lakes Avengers finally get their chance to save the universe and the son of a super-villain joins the Runaways.

All this, plus the Young Avengers, Marvel Zombies, the rebirth of Drax the Destroyer, the return of the original Defenders and more!

Much of the set-up for the stories from this year (the Avengers disassembling, the fall of Asgard and the X-Men's latest direction) actually took place in 2004 and it's well worth going back and step and checking them out first.
MCG NOTE - your guide to reading comics:
  • Issues in blue are worth reading and often play a part in the great Marvel tapestry.
  • Issues in grey are possibly of interest, stories of note that aren't essential or issues added by fan request or once-great tales that are no longer 'required reading'.

X-MEN READING ORDER: Children of the Atom (1963-1970)

Who knew they'd end up being one of Marvel's biggest franchises? The X-Men (originally intended to be launched as 'The Mutants') were created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and really focused heavily on the Marvel vibe of teenage outsiders. Despite the presence of regular nemesis Magneto (now one of Marvel's premiere villains), interactions with the rest of the Marvel Universe and a career-defining run by artist Neal Adams, the teens didn't really click with the audience and the series was cancelled after 66 issues. WRAITH WAR (1984-1985)

Countless years ago, the Celestials messed about with the Skulls ' gene pool and, among other things, created an offshoot of Deviant Skrulls called Dire Wraiths . These warped and murderous magic users were chased off their home to the world and found a new home in the Dark Nebula , naming their new home Wraithworld . Then, just two hundred years ago, the Dire Wraiths invaded Galador , only to get their saggy arses kicked across the universe by the Galadorian Spaceknights . The Spaceknights spread out across the galaxies, hunting the Dire Wraiths as they tried to invade other planets. One such cyborg Spaceknight, Rom , came to Earth to end the threat they posed to our world. Most people perceived Rom as a rampaging alien toaster-bot, as the Wraiths used magic to disguise themselves as human and Rom lost a little of his humanity over the centuries.  But he'd run into many of Earth heroes during his time on Earth, and made friends with serial sidekick Rick Jones and found lov
