CAT TRAP (2000)

CAT TRAP is actually just a two-parter, but the issues before that set the scene for the whole mini-event. T'Challa has accepted a challenge to his rulership of Wakanda and his claim to the title of Black Panther from his resurrected nemesis, Erik Killmonger. Killmonger is the only foe the Panther has never defeated and it's looking like this time isn't an exception. In fact, Everett K Ross arrives in Wakanda just in time to see Killmonger deliver what appears to be the killing blow!

Meanwhile, out in space, Deadpool has found himself on a mission that's left him stranded in an asteroid field. Since Loki boosted his powers, the 'Merc With a Mouth' can't die. So how's he going to get out of this one? And how did his mission to save Lobo knock-off Dirty Wolff leave him stuff out there in the void?

Black Panther #21 (tie-in)
Erik Killmonger has beaten the Black Panther into a coma. To stop Killmonger from killing an unconscious man, Everett K Ross plays his trump card. As T'Challa gave Ross the honour of being king in his absence, Ross yields and declares the contest over to save T'Challa's life, not realising that this means Killmonger wins and is now both Black Panther and King of Wakanda. Over the course of the next week, Brother Voodoo keeps a close eye on T'Challa's body while Moon Knight accompanies his spirit to the Kingdom of the Dead where they meet Khonshu in an effort to encourage him to bring the Panther back from the brink of death by reestablishing his bond with the Panther God. But Nightmare has invaded and corrupted the Kingdom of the Dead and murdered the souls of the chieftains while disguised as Khonshu. Back on the physical plane, Everett K Ross discovers someone has murdered Brother Voodoo...

Deapool #43 (tie-in)
Deadpool (Wade Wilson) was hired by the Last Men to liberate their leader, Dirty Wolff, from the outer space prison colony Damnation City. Deadpool fails in his mission and finds himself stranded in space, even passing up a lift home with the Starjammers to avoid any further cosmic adventures. Meanwhile, on Earth, Titania and Constrictor clash with the Absorbing Man who plans on the job attempts to steal they same three trailers of Porsches. Titania's identity comes into question when the Absorbing Man claims she's back at home, seriously ill. Titania and Constrictor return to the apartment they share with Deadpool (still planning on killing him), where Reverend Doctor Michael Ibn Al-Hajj Achebe shows up and offers Wade a special assignment...
Black Panther #22 (tie-in)
Nightmare throws T'Challa's worst childhood moments at him when they battle in the Kingdom of the Dead, while Everett K Ross is dealing with Malice's attempt on Brother Voodoo's life in the physical world world. The Panther almost kills Moon Knight when he falls for his trickery, but the duo end up helping him return to his own realm and gaining the Panther God's approval, allowing them to wake up. Everett K Ross takes it upon himself to employ the treacherous White Wolf to help him defend Wakanda. In America, Erik Killmonger dons his own Black Panther costume and is using T'Challa's Priority Card to claim membership in the Avengers...

Deadpool #44
In Wakanda, T'Challa investigates Malice's attempt on Brother Voodoo's life. In America, the puppet-wielding Achebe hires Deadpool to kidnap Killmonger's leopard, Preyy. Achebe then intercepts Tony Stark's call to Wakanda to verify Killmonger's claims to his title, while Deadpool passes himself off as an Animal Control Officer to get close to Preyy and teleport him to Wakanda, only for Triathlon to go along for the ride, too. The Avengers realise Deadpool is on their lawn, and a fight with Killmonger breaks out. Titania and Constrictor pull Deadpool out of there, only for the Wasp to give chase until the three villains are teleported out of there...
Black Panther #23
The Avengers and Killmonger take a Quinjet to Wakanda where Deadpool, Constrictor and 'Titania' are now prisoners of Achebe. Achebe frees Deadpool so he can kill Killmonger and return T'Challa to the throne. The Avengers come under attack from the White Wolf's Hatut Zeraze, then Deadpool comes gunning for Killmonger. Everett K Ross ends the fight by ordering the Avengers out of Wakanda.

Killmonger decides not to fulfil his childhood fantasy of joining the Avengers, deciding they're gutless. She-Hulk delivers documentation to Ross to tell him his US citizenship has been revoked. W'Kabi claims his place as Wakanda's regent over Ross. And Malice finds her way beneath Wakanda where she stands ready to kill the hoverchair-bound T'Challa...

AVENGERS READING ORDER: Before the Avengers (1962-1963)

I'll openly admit to not really being a fan of the '60s comics. No one should feel obligated to go back to the very beginning to understand the Marvel Universe , no matter what anyone tells you. But, for those of you who love that era or are just plain curious about it, I present to you the earliest appearances of Ant-Man , Hulk , Thor , Iron Man and the Wasp. Five heroes who go on to become Earth's Mightiest... After this little run down of their early days, you'd be looking to pick up the very first issue of their team book when they become the Avengers ! See how they gain their unique powers, fight Communists, fend off alien invasions, fight Communists, face odd arch nemeses and fight Communists. As always, I'd like to thank the guys over at www.chronologyproject.com which I use as a basis and work out my own continuity. Those guys have done all the heavy lifting for me! EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HERO (2012)

OK, so you don't need to read the Avenging Spider-Man issues listed below, but issue Avenging Spider-Man # 9 came out a week before Captain Marvel #1 , making it Carol Danvers '  first appearance as Captain Marvel . Plus her odd, pseudo-flirtatious relationship with Peter Parker continues in that series and the storyline is also written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, writer of Carol's solo Captain Marvel series. Carol Danvers first appeared as a love interest for the original Captain Marvel (the Kree hero Mar-Vell ) before gaining Kree powers from exposure to the Psyche-Magnitron and becoming Ms Marvel . From there, she lost her powers and emotions to Rogue , gained different powers to become Binary , returned to her Ms Marvel costume but took the name Warbird , then returned as Ms Marvel once again. Isn't it time she jus took on the Captain Marvel mantle? [THE COMING OF CAPTAIN MARVEL - Carol Danvers' first appearance] Captain Marvel #1 Avenging Spider-Man #9-10 C...
